White Belts: Jiu-Jitsu Will Give You What You’re Missing

By Coach Kevin

The first day of any Jiu-Jitsu practitioner’s journey is always the most important. The moment a grappler decides to step on the mat signifies the beginning of a new lifestyle.

Many people start training for different reasons, and the allure of a Jiu-Jitsu academy takes many shapes. Some are interested in losing weight or learning self-defense. Others want to break up the monotony of their standard workout routine with something new.

An even smaller group starts with big dreams of becoming a UFC champion or conquering the BJJ competition scene—until reality sets in on how difficult that path truly is.

The reason why a new white belt joins a gym is less important than the fact that they take that first step. Whatever the initial motivation, Jiu-Jitsu will change their life. The art is more satisfying and life-altering than just losing weight or learning to fight. It challenges practitioners in unimaginable ways, and the journey won’t be easy.

Two Types of White Belts

Starting as a new white belt usually goes in one of two ways—both ending in pain and growth. There are the former athletes or “alpha” beginners eager to prove themselves, and there are the less confident beginners just trying to survive class.

The athletic white belt will have an early edge. Agility and strength can carry them for the first six months. The less athletic beginner will struggle differently: survival becomes their main goal, with technique as their compass through shark-infested mats.

The less athletic white belt soon learns that drilling techniques against a compliant partner builds muscle memory but doesn’t prepare them for the chaos of live sparring. They must first learn how to stay alive.

During sparring, there’s no time for overthinking. Many beginners get caught trying to recall every detail of a move instead of focusing on the most crucial rule—don’t get submitted.

Broad Strokes, Not Details

Executing even the fundamentals under pressure takes years of practice. That’s why I tell white belts feeling lost to focus on broad strokes.

Most modern gyms have an intro curriculum covering key techniques from each position. But the moves themselves are secondary—the real lesson is learning the rules of each position and how to play the game.

Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, but within it lies the game of BJJ, and all games have rules. Knowing those rules creates a safe way to recreate the stress of a real-life confrontation daily, making it the most complete martial art for modern self-defense.

For less athletic white belts, understanding positional rules and basic strategies teaches them how to win, even before they have the skill to execute complex techniques.

The Alpha’s Lesson

The athletic white belt faces a different challenge. Their physical gifts allow them to dominate early, often overpowering less experienced opponents. But to beat more skilled grapplers, they’ll need to slow down, refine their technique, and learn to move correctly.

The first few weeks may feel like reconnecting with an old love, but eventually, they’ll realize that to progress, they must let go of pure strength and embrace the technical side of the art.

The Shared Journey

Everyday white belts fall into one of these categories, but growth requires crossing into the other. Jiu-Jitsu forces weaker students to find resilience, while humbling the stronger students into accepting defeat as part of growth.

It’s a rare pursuit that reveals limitations, forces practitioners to address them, and transforms both the meek and the arrogant.

So hang in there, white belt. The first year is like barreling down a winding mountain road with failing brakes—but if you stick with it, you’ll discover it’s exactly what your life has been missing.
